about
Written in the early stages of quarantine, and recorded in bedrooms and backyards across Winnipeg, Something Better explores at once the mundane and the macroscopic.
‘Something Better’ explores at once the mundane and the macroscopic. It’s the story of a relationship doomed by assumptions and misunderstandings, and the struggle to move forward despite the inevitable. It’s a reflection of the daily challenges people face in relating to, understanding, and having compassion for each other.
It also allows songwriter Heather Thomas to question her place in the world.
“Before lockdown, I was just pulling up to some big opportunities when everything stopped. I had all this expectation riding on 2020. Having everything taken away… I really had to start questioning my place in the music industry, and beyond that, my responsibility as a human being. Where do I fit in? What do I have to offer? What really matters? I was seeing all this pain in the people around me. I was and still am confronting things I’ve believed for a long time and saying ‘screw it, there has to be a better way’.”
lyrics
lyrics:
I come in the front door and you go out the back
It's a wholehearted laugh, when I think about it
We're both running from what we can't know we both want
And we both want to want the same thing, but we don't
When are we gonna talk openly about what we're doing
When are we gonna do something more than just screwing around
Cause I think I've found
Something better
It's a big bad idea in my head, oh my dear
Try to see through the dark but the glass isn't clear
Why can't we look ahead, see the end of the line
Instead we stumble back most... most of the time
When are we gonna talk openly about what we're doing
When are we gonna do something more than just screwing around
Cause I think I've found
Something better
I come in the front door and you go out the back
It's a wholehearted laugh, when I think about it
